Solutions in Action-Karlville Development

Miami-based Karlville Development is a global manufacturer of shrink sleeve converting, shrink sleeve application, pouch converting, and narrow web slitting/inspection. Through recent strategic acquisitions, the group has entered the packaging sector increasing its portfolio of packaging equipment for shrink sleeve application and tape handling and tape bundling applications. Serving a wide base of customers in the printing and converting industry, Karlville Development is committed to engineering innovative technologies for flexible packaging applications.

Laurent Corbet, technical sales director for Karlville Development, explained that the new SleevePro 150 Shrink Sleeve Application Machine has been conceived with a very precise purpose.

” This new machine has been designed mainly for small to medium companies who require reliable and flexible solutions, but that are very careful to find a competitive balance between efficiency and cost”, said Corbet. In fact, the new machine machine fits low speed applications-it processes about 150 containers per minute- and can be used for flexible packaging in several industries, such as beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics, sauces and dressings”.

In addition, Corbet said, ” We think its price is very attractive for the US market too”.

In order to combine, on the same machine, reliability and efficiency with compact functionalities at affordable costs, Karlville Develepment selected an electronic platform configuration based on the Logix integrated solution from Rockwell Automation.

” We decided on the Allen-Bradley Compact Logix programmable automation controller (PAC), with motion control capabilities, as a solution-which is directly connected to Allen-Bradley Kinetix 6000 servo drives, to Allen-Bradley MP-Series™ low inertia (MPL) servo motors driving the axes, and to I/O in rack”, Corbet said.

Thanks to this configuration, the new Karlville Development machine delivers to end users a compact, cost-effective, yet flexible solution for shrink sleeve applications. The Rockwell Automation Logix Platform, part of the Integrated Architecture™ System, allows the Karlville Development team and its end users to share the same programming language for all sequential and motion control parts, due to a unique database for the PAC and human machine interface and on a unique connection for remote access. This integrated automated solutions enables end users to reach the highest level of automation, thus drastically reducing machine downtime.

Karlville Development decided to turn to Rockwell Automation system mainly because they needed a partner who could give them qualified support in the research and development phase, in pre-sales and after-sales service.

Karlville Development knows that end-users value customer service as well as product quality. A global supplier such as Rockwell Automation cooperated with Karlville Development both in Asia, where the new solution was manufactured and in the rest of the world where the solution was delivered.
